Hear Louis Baker at his most soulful with new confessional single “Addict”.
This increasingly popular New Zealand artist evokes classic soul through a seductive ‘70s bass groove and Motown-esque guitar stabs, which showcases a mellifluous vocal range and primal R&B scream, something which had only been heard in his live performances. There’s a striking juxtaposition between this steamy love song aesthetic and the dark, tormented life of addiction, and yet the whole theme runs smoothly thanks to Louis Baker’s charismatic portrayal of these lustful, potentially dangerous feelings. “Addict” also displays Baker’s multi-instrumentalist talents, as he plays the role of bassist, guitarist, lead and backing vocalist on this track.

It was very much a piece of inspired studio creativity that came about when this Wellington-based talent teamed up with two-time Ivor Novello Award winner and grammy-nominated songwriter/producer Sacha Skarbek, producer Josh Fountain (Leisure) and new artist Em-Haley (Thiea). It’s a treasured moment that Louis Baker recalls for us here:
"My musical language stems from a lot of soul music - it's alway been a huge influence on me. So naturally, being in the studio with Sacha made me feel like writing a soul tune, because that's something we have in common. I think we started by playing a few chords that felt good and once the song took a rough shape, it started to feel like a nod to some of my heroes like Bill Withers, Bobby Caldwell and D'Angelo, with the Motown guitar stabs, Wurlitzer, and the punchy Fender bass. It was so fun to be creative and collaborative in that way."
“Addict” follows previous single “Gave It All Away”, which was aired on BBC 6Music, Australia’s Double J, Amazin Radio and was featured on Red Bull’s 20 before 17. That’s not to mention notable past blog coverage from Clash, Line of Best Fit, Indie Shuffle, EarMilk and MTV.
