Papa Bare + Prof. J is a Brooklyn-based artist and production duo featuring Garret Montoya and Nolan Jones. With diverse roots in hip hop, pop, gospel, and indie, they have developed a rhythmic sound characterized by catchy melodies, clever lyricism, and bright vocal layering.

While students at Cornell University, the duo led an award winning a cappella group and together began writing and performing original music. After several years working in the fashion and green energy industries in New York, the pair left the corporate world to focus on their music in 2017. Papa Bare + Prof. J state that their primary motivation is to create music that spreads a spirit of positivity, inclusion, and self-expression.

The duo describes their musical aesthetic within the language of shapes and colors, culminating in two parallel soundscapes depicted as Peach and BlueGreen. While the Peach sound has a playful, funky, wink-strut energy, BlueGreen embodies a mistier midtempo groove and a heavy-smooth vibe. The two modes interweave to allow Montoya and Jones the conceptual space to express a wide variety of lyrical and sonic emotion.

Papa Bare + Prof. J’s first two releases, “When You Say” and “Yeah,” represent the duo’s vision for the parallels between the BlueGreen and Peach soundscapes respectively. A pair of complementary EP’s are expected in early 2018.

“Yeah” is the image of being led through the city with your love at sunset. From that we wanted to paint the soundscape peach by integrating instruments and sounds that bring back memories of childhood. Cash registers, quacking trombones, nintendo synths, fisher price xylophones, a jack in the box boing, and dolphin sounds take you back to simpler days of cartoons and gushers. Combined with hip hop elements, “Yeah” exudes an air of cool, confident nostalgia.
