Along with the likes of J Hus and MoStack and more, Belly Squad are bringing the afrobeats revolution to the forefront of UK urban music. 'Like That' is taken from their debut EP ‘Banana’, out now - the video premiered exclusively on Link Up TV.
From South and East London, Belly Squad are Ty and Max, both 18 and T1, 20. The trio have built a huge underground following, churning out street bangers; a mix of hard, inner-city rhymes sweetened by endlessly catchy melodic hooks and afro rhythms. Clocking up over 6 million plays across their own smashes like ‘Banana’, as well as remixes of US rap anthems like Young Thug & Travis Scott’s ‘Pick Up The Phone’, Desiigner’s ‘Panda’ and Drake’s ‘Controlla’. Their hybrid ‘afrobeats’ sound blends elements of their African and Caribbean heritage with grime, R&B and road rap.
The boys have been carving out their own lane, creating and uploading self-made street anthems to YouTube – shooting their own DIY videos. Their calling card ‘Banana’ dropped last year, followed quickly by a blockbuster new remix featuring some of the UK’s biggest names, including MOBO Award winner Abra Cadabra, Black Butter signings Young T & Bugsey, Timbo, and Showkey, recorded before the hotly tipped rappers' untimely passing earlier this year. The video has now clocked up over 5 million views on YouTube.
Belly Squad feature on the forthcoming compilation 'MOVES: The Sound of UK Afrobeats', out May 19th. Catch them at Noisey at The Great Escape festival on May 19th at Patterns, Brighton.
