Battle rap legend and award-winning hip-hop artist Bishop Bigrante releases his longly-awaited debut album Legacy, a compilation of his best singles released throughout his 15-year career in the music industry. The launch of his album will be followed by the release of his music video later this month for his former hit single “It’s fo Twenty” (featuring the late rapper Nate Dogg). At the time of the track’s initial release in 2007, Brigante was the first Canadian rapper to ever collaborate with the late artist. A true veteran to Canada’s hip-hop scene, Brigante is also internationally known for going nearly undefeated in the battle rap community, collaborating with the industry’s biggest rappers on his music (Drake, MC Lyte, Sticky Fingaz) and touring with mega artists such as Busta Rhymes and G-Unit.

Brigante’s debut album is best described as his formal re-introduction and come-back into hip-hop as he relaunches his music career. Legacy gives fans both old and new a body of work they can listen to that truly embodies Brigante’s journey and growth as an artist. “‘Legacy’ is a story of survival. I grew up in a rough neighbourhood where hope in getting out of that vicious cycle of violence just didn’t exist for us. But as soon as I started rapping and making music, everything changed. People could relate to what I was saying and suddenly we had a voice,” says Brigante. “The support and success that followed was priceless and to this day, I’m so grateful for everything hip-hop has given me. My album is an ode to my journey and a shoutout to all the fans that have inspired me along the way.” 

Before launching his music career, Bishop first became a household name within the hip-hop community for his involvement in battle rap, going mostly undefeated for a majority of his career. He became the first Canadian rapper to appear on BET’s Freestyle Friday segment on106 & Park, an appearance that put his name on the map after winning for three consecutive weeks. Bishop then spent years battle rapping in various tournaments and defeating high-profile opponents, further solidifying himself as one of the best battle rappers in North America.

Bishop later switched gears to music and released his debut single, “That’s the way” in 2004 alongside his music video which played regularly on MUCH Music. The release of the track ignited what would become a highly successful music career for Bishop, where he got to work and collaborate with some of the best in the industry. Singles like “Shorty Grindin,” (featuring Drake and JD Era), as well as “That’s Still The Way” (featuring MC Lyte and Sticky Fingaz) and “It’s fo Twenty” (featuring Nate Dogg) all received high radio rotation in Canada and critical acclaim from both fans and critics alike. The release of “My Style” in 2011 also gained traction in the United States, particularly in Buffalo where he won  Producer of the Year, Hip Hop Song of the Year, People’s Choice Award, and Hip Hop Artist of the Year  from American radio station WBLK 93.7 FM. Apart from music, Bishop has also juggled a successful acting career, most notably appearing in Orphan Black, Narc, Evil Feed and starring in the TV series Platinum.

While Bishop did take a 12 year hiatus from battle rapping, he remained a leading figure in the community and continued to support it by co-hosting world-renowned battle rap league King of the Dot (KOTD). When he decided to make his return in 2015, he did it on KOTD’s Blackout 5 stage against high-profile opponent Arsonal. The battle was a must-watch amongst fans, and later dubbed one of the best performances of the event.  To this day, Brigante continues with his involvement with KOTD, co-hosting alongside Gully TK and KOTD creator Organik, where they emcee major tournaments like Blackout and World Domination.

With such an expansive career, Bishop is the true embodiment of an entertainer and arguably one of the best rappers in Canada.
